Update: At about 9:45 p.m. Saturday, Portland firefighters were called back to the church after neighbors spotted a fire near an electrical line connected to the roof. Firefighters were attempting to attack flames in the attic and work around metal gutters that appeared to be energized with an electrical current.
Portland firefighters extinguished a smoky electrical fire Saturday at the Allen Temple CME Church before it could erupt and spread to the rest of the historic building.
The 4:12 p.m. blaze at 4236 N.E. Eighth Ave. off Skidmore Street filled the King Neighborhood with white smoke. When firefighters arrived, they found fire in the siding on the outside of the church and quickly extinguished the flames.
“A Portland Fire Investigator was called to the scene and determined that this was an electrical fire in the wall,” said Portland Fire & Rescue spokesman Terry Foster.
