Donnie McClurkin Shares How He Went from Living In the Basement of a Prostitute’s House to Where He Is Today

GRAMMY® winning gospel singer Donnie McClurkin is fruitful in his ministry and financially successful.

But during a January 29 appearance on TBN’s “Praise the Lord” he reflected on how, two decades ago, he had hit rock bottom.

“No bank account, no car, no home. At 31 years old, I had nothing, living in the basement of a prostitute’s house. No opulence at all there,” said the New York-based Perfecting Faith Church leader on stage during the live taping of the religious program.

One night, while attending service, he told the TBN audience he only had $35 to his name, which he gave in the evening offering.

“I just gave in worship. I wasn’t looking to manipulate God to give back to me,” he explained. “God was worth this—my last.”

After sacrificially sowing the seed, McClurkin said God instructed him to call his late mother, Frances McClurkin, who lived in New York.

The next day, he said, “I walked three miles from my room to the church office” to use the phone, because he did not have one of his own.
