The Assembly may be getting its first African-American speaker.
Bronx Assemblyman Carl Heastie’s bid to succeed disgraced Sheldon Silver as leader of Albany’s lower house got a major boost Wednesday when another top contender dropped out and threw his support to Heastie.
“Throughout my time of service in this Assembly, I have come to know Carl as an exceptionally effective legislator. He leads by building consensus, listening to good ideas and serving all New Yorkers,” said Harlem Assemblyman Keith Wright when he took himself out of the running.
“As our chamber’s next speaker, Carl Heastie will re-energize our institution by ushering in the bold reforms we need to make our role in government more transparent and more accountable to the voters,” Wright added.
Insiders said Heastie is now the favorite to take over for Silver.
