We Are the World Celebrates 30 Years


Wednesday, January 28, 2015 marks The 30thAnniversary of “We Are The World” one of the most historic and important recording sessions of all time, that featured 45 of the biggest names in American popular music.

A 30-year commemorative milestone program highlighting “We Are The World” and USA for Africa will take place on Wednesday, January 28, 2015, starting at 11am-noon at the Grammy Museum in downtown Los Angeles.

“We Are The World” featured such legendary artists as: Ray Charles, Lionel Richie, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, Bette Midler, Billy Joel, Dionne Warwick, Kenny Rogers, Smokey Robinson, Tina Turner, Stevie Wonder, etc.

Visionary activist Harry Belafonte, legendary music producer Quincy Jones and illustrious manager Ken Kragen were the heart and soul of “We Are The World.” Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie created the words and music and Quincy Jones conducted and produced the “historic” recording.

“We Are The World” became an international sensation in 1985; the single sold more than 7.5 million copies and won Grammy’s for “Song of the Year” and “Record of the Year,” but most importantly focused both media and public attention on the famine that was killing millions in sub-Saharan Africa and the endemic problems of hunger in Africa that still persist today.
