The World Evangelical Alliance says Philippines Bishop Efraim Tendero is to be the next secretary general and CEO of the WEA at a time of growing cooperation by global Christians.
Tendero currently serves as the national director of the Philippine Council of Evangelical Churches, the WEA said in a January 23 statement.
The announcement came the same week that representatives of the WEA and the World Council of Churches in Bossey near Geneva in Switzerland to explore possible areas of future cooperation.
At the January 20 and 21 meeting the WEA and WCC participants reflected on current developments in society and churches, and in evangelical and ecumenical movements.
They shared current plans and discussed possibilities for closer collaboration, they said in a joint statement.
Bishop Tendero succeeds Dr. Geoff Tunnicliffe who announced early in 2014 that he would not be seeking a third term after leading the WEA for the past 10 years.
Upon his appointment, Tendero said: “This is an enormous task and I put my whole trust and confidence in the Almighty God who called me into this ministry.”
He will begin his five year tenure on March 1, 2015.
