Let’s take a quick look at today’s prophecy-related headlines which point towards the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ and the end of the world as we know it.

First, today, under the Sign category of WARS & RUMORS OF WARS — According to Reuters, the US military is planning to deploy more than 400 troops to help train Syrian rebels to fight the Islamic State, along with hundreds of US support personnel. The US military has not yet identified where it will draw its forces from for the training mission which is expected to begin in the spring at sites outside Syria. Turkey, Qatar and Saudi Arabia have offered to host the training.

Second, today, under the Sign category of WARS & RUMORS OF WARS — According to The New York Times, after a series of police raids and a deadly gun battle, arrests of terror suspects in Belgium, Germany and France on Thursday and Friday highlighted the scope and complexity of the challenge facing European intelligence agencies and security services in confronting the expanding threat from radical jihadists, many of them battle-hardened in Syria and Iraq. On Friday, Belgian authorities announced that 13 people had been detained nationwide after two men suspected of planning an imminent attack were shot dead by police. Authorities in France reported 12 detentions, and 250 police officers in Berlin swooped down on 12 locations to detain five Turks on suspicion of recruiting, financing and helping Turkish and Che-chen fighters get to Syria. The combination of the raids in three countries suggested a new willingness on the part of the authorities across Europe to act more aggressively and pre-emptively to head off potential threats.

Third, today, under the Sign category of THE TURMOIL IN ISRAEL & THE MIDDLE EAST — According to the Jerusalem Post, the Arab League on Thursday authorized its members to seek international support for resubmitting to the UN Security Council the Palestinian resolution calling for establishing a timeline for an Israeli withdrawal to the pre-1967 lines. The decision was taken at the end of an emergency meeting of Arab League foreign ministers in Cairo. The Arab League also reiterated its “absolute” opposition to recognize Israel as a Jewish state, a demand they called “racist” and said would have “grave consequences for the Palestinians and the region.”

Fourth, today, under the Sign category of THE TURMOIL IN ISRAEL & THE MIDDLE EAST — According to the Associated Press, Key Mideast mediators — the United States, the United Nations, the European Union and Russia — will meet this month to discuss the way toward Israeli-Palestinian peace as tensions escalate in the decades-old conflict. U.S. Ambassador Samantha Power made the announcement during the U.N. Security Council’s monthly Mideast debate, calling the status quo “unsustainable.” She urged both sides “to exercise maximum restraint and avoid steps that threaten to push Israeli-Palestinian relations into a cycle of further escalation.” The meeting of envoys from the so-called Quartet of Mideast mediators will be held on January 26 in Brussels.

Fifth, today, under the Sign category of INCREASED NATURAL DISASTERS — According to Newsweek, Independent analyses released on Friday from both NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) came to the same conclusion about 2014: A hotter year on earth has never been recorded. Plus, December hit a record of its own, as the reports stated a hotter December had never been recorded, either. The global average temperature in 2014 was 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit above the 20th century average, beating out 2010 as the record holder.

The prophetic passage of Scripture we are looking at today is the entire chapter of Leviticus 16. Verses 29-30 of this passage read: “And this shall be a statute for ever unto you: that in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, ye shall afflict your souls, and do no work at all, whether it be one of your own country, or a stranger that sojourneth among you: For on that day shall the priest make an atonement for you, to cleanse you, that ye may be clean from all your sins before the Lord.”

Allow me to share with you some commentary on this passage from the Popular Bible Prophecy Commentary, edited by Tim LaHaye and Ed Hindson.

The connection between Jesus and the high priest on the Day of Atonement runs still deeper. Just as the high priest exchanged his normative, glorious garments for humble robes, so too did Jesus exchange His glory for humble human flesh. Furthermore, no weeklong, all-night study sessions were necessary for this High Priest, nor was an understudy waiting in the wings. He had no need to memorize the Word of God; He is the incarnate Word of God.

The second facet of Jesus’ typological fulfillment of the Day of Atonement, according to Hebrews, is as God’s perfect sacrifice. Not only is Jesus the perfect High Priest, He also offered up blood superior to that possessed by bulls and goats. Animal blood could only cover up sin and never completely remove it. The Messiah’s sacrifice, by contrast, thoroughly sanctifies us in the sight of God. This perfect sacrifice, indeed, makes us holy. No Levitical high priest could possibly pretend that his sins were definitively dealt with on the Day of Atonement. He only cleansed the external, the flesh. The fact that the Day of Atonement sacrifices had to be repeated annually proved that they were insufficient. If they had truly cleansed sin, they would not have needed to be done again and again. The rituals contained an abbreviated expiration date. However, Jesus, offering the perfect sacrifice, cleansed the heart as well.

The author of Hebrews also sees a typological connection between Jesus and the disposing of the bodies of the slain bull and goat. Just as it was necessary for their bodies to be burned outside the camp (or city), so too, Jesus, bearing Israel’s (and the world’s) sin, suffered and was executed outside the walls of Jerusalem. Interestingly, in a stunning foreshadowing of the circumstances surrounding Jesus sacrifice, the Mish-nah records the Jewish population’s usual abusive hitting and plucking out of the second goat’s (scapegoat) hair as the doomed animal departed the city.

A final typological fulfillment of the Day of Atonement will occur during the Tribulation, “the time of Jacob’s distress”, when the nation of Israel will experience an unprecedented affliction of both body and soul. However, the Tribulation will powerfully conclude with Israel’s repentance and salvation at the very moment of miraculous rescue by its Messiah at His second coming.

If the Lord tarries His coming and we live, we will continue looking at the prophetic passages of the Bible in our next broadcast / podcast.

Our second coming quote for today is from J. Hudson Taylor. He said, “Since he may come any day, it is well to be ready every day.”

If you are not ready for the return of Jesus Christ, may I encourage you to get ready today by receiving Him as your Savior. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will. Romans 10:13 says, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Keep looking up for your redemption draweth nigh. Let us join in the prayer of John the Revelator — “Even so, come, Lord Jesus.” God bless you.
