Let’s take a quick look at today’s prophecy-related headlines which point towards the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ and the end of the world as we know it.

First, today, under the Sign category of INCREASED PERSECUTION — According to Christian Today, Paul Robinson, the Chief Executive of persecution watchdog Release International, said there is a “pressing threat” to Christians in Kenya and Tanzania as a result of “Islamic groups determined to establish their brutal version of Sharia law.” He said, “Islamist groups are gaining ground in Africa” and “There is evidence to suggest they will become a growing force for instability in East Africa in 2015. The greatest risk to freedom of faith in the New Year comes from Islamic groups determined to establish their brutal version of Sharia law – whatever the cost to human life.”

Second, today, under the Sign category of WARS & RUMORS OF WARS — According to the New York Times, a monitoring group has reported that more than 76,000 people died in Syria’s civil war in 2014, including more than 3,500 children. The figures would make last year the deadliest in Syria since the conflict began in March 2011. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, put the total number of dead in the conflict at 206,603 as of the last day of 2014.

Third, today, under the Sign category of WARS & RUMORS OF WARS — According to Reuters, the United Nations has said that violence in Iraq in 2014 killed at least 12,282 civilians, making it the deadliest year since the sectarian bloodshed of 2006-2007. The majority of the deaths – nearly 8,500 – occurred during the second half of the year following the expansion of the Sunni Muslim Islamic State insurgency in June out of Anbar province leading to widespread clashes with security forces.

Fourth, today, under the Sign category of DISTRESS AMONG NATIONS — According to the Associated Press, Russia has angrily criticized the latest US sanctions, saying they could derail cooperation with Washington on dealing with the Iranian nuclear standoff and the Syrian crisis. Russia-US ties have plunged to post-Cold War lows over Ukraine as Washington has introduced economic sanctions against Moscow for its annexation of Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula and support for a pro-Russian insurgency in eastern Ukraine. The Russian Foreign Ministry dismissed the new US sanctions as unfounded and warned Washington that its actions “are putting in question the prospects for bilateral cooperation in settling the situation around the Iranian nuclear program, the Syrian crisis and other acute international problems.”

Fifth, today, under the Sign category of THE TURMOIL IN ISRAEL & THE MIDDLE EAST — According to Ynet News, Egypt has announced that work will begin next week to double the width of a buffer zone being built along the border with the Gaza Strip to prevent terrorists infiltrating from the Palestinian enclave. A 500-metre wide buffer zone is now being built along some 10 kilometers of the border, with some 800 homes being demolished in the process. Construction of the buffer zone comes in the wake of an October 24 suicide bombing that killed 30 Egyptian soldiers and wounded scores more.

The prophetic passage of Scripture we are looking at today is Exodus 23:20 which reads: “Behold, I send an Angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared.”

Allow me to share with you some commentary on this passage from the Popular Bible Prophecy Commentary, edited by Tim LaHaye and Ed Hindson.

This passage reveals that the angel of the Lord, a preincarnate manifestation of the second person of the Trinity, will both protect the Israelites and deliver them into their land. This angel must be diligently obeyed. Defiance of Him will result in His refusal to forgive sin. This angel acts with an authority that belongs to God alone—He forgives sins and possesses the divine covenant name; He is a manifestation of YHWH. The reward for obedience to this angel is that He would be the adversary of Israel’s enemies and would personally ensure their defeat. Once in the land, Israel must never worship idols. Rather, the false gods of Canaan must be utterly destroyed. The five rewards promised for the Hebrews’ unwavering allegiance to the true God are the provision of food, the removal of sickness, the avoidance of miscarriages, the absence of barrenness, and personal longevity.

If the Lord tarries His coming and we live, we will continue looking at the prophetic passages of the Bible in our next broadcast / podcast.

Our second coming quote for today is from Andrew Murray. He said, “There is such a danger of our being so occupied with the things that are to come more than with him who is to come.”

If you are not ready for the return of Jesus Christ, may I encourage you to get ready today by receiving Him as your Savior. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will. Romans 10:13 says, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Keep looking up for your redemption draweth nigh. Let us join in the prayer of John the Revelator — “Even so, come, Lord Jesus.” God bless you.
