Mars Hill Church Website Is Taken Down

The time grows short to retrieve information from the Mars Hill Church website, which will reportedly go down at midnight Eastern time on New Year’s Eve.

The 18-year-old, Seattle-based former mega church is officially ceasing to be at year’s end, its website at the moment still advertising “A New Christmas Sermon Series” and Christmas Eve service times at two remaining Mars Hill “campuses.”

But former Lead Pastor Mark Driscoll is up with a very similar-looking http://www.markdriscoll.org website that offers past Driscoll sermons, a “Spiritual Warfare” series, “best books” recommendations, blog posts on subjects ranging from Christmas to planning a sabbatical, plus an appeal for money.

The church that Driscoll co-founded officially signed off Sunday with a sermon by Pastor Rick Warren of the Southern California-based Saddleback Church.

Warren offered words of encouragement to the new, independent churches formed by former Mars Hill congregations, telling them: “Even in God’s garden of grace, broken trees bear fruit.”

“The church has lots of business to conduct so it really can’t legally go away until final dissolution,” Warren Throckmorton, a Pennsylvania college professor who has tracked the Mars Hill implosion, wrote Wednesday on the Patheos website.

Mars Hill must still liquidate property. It has promised to distribute remaining assets to “seed” congregations that are re-forming as independent churches.
