Let’s take a quick look at today’s prophecy-related headlines which point towards the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ and the end of the world as we know it.
First, today, under the Sign category of WARS & RUMORS OF WARS — According to the Associated Press, a senior commander in Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guard has been killed during a battle against the Islamic State extremist group in Iraq. A statement posted on the Guard’s website said Brig. Gen. Hamid Taqavi was “martyred while performing his advisory mission to confront ISIS terrorists in Samarra.” Shiite Iran says it has sent military advisers to assist Syria and Iraq in battling Sunni-led rebels and extremist groups, but has denied sending any combat forces to either country. The Guard said Taqavi was assisting Iraqi troops and Shiite volunteers defending Samarra, a city north of Baghdad which is home to a major Shiite shrine. It did not provide any details on how he was killed but said a funeral procession will be held in Tehran on Monday.
Second, today, under the Sign category of WARS & RUMORS OF WARS — According to the Los Angeles Times, the Syrian government said Saturday that it would be willing to participate in a Russia-sponsored conference to end its almost four-year-long civil war. The Syrian state news agency said there had been “ongoing discussions” to plan a meeting that would be a prelude to a peace conference in Moscow. It also vowed to continue to combat terrorism “over every part of Syrian soil.” The Syrian government regards the rebellion against its rule as terrorism, and routinely uses that term when discussing the anti-government forces. Russia has been a staunch ally of the government of President Bashar Assad, and is deeply distrusted by his foes, limiting the odds of success of any such conference.
Third, today, under the Sign category of THE TURMOIL IN ISRAEL & THE MIDDLE EAST — According to the Times of Israel, an elite wing of the Iranian military has claimed that its troops have been along Lebanon’s border with Israel. A Twitter account associated with Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps tweeted the statement on Thursday along with several pictures of Iranian soldiers posing with uniformed Lebanese counterparts. A report by MEMRI, a Middle Eastern media watchdog, tracked the photos to a December 17 blog post affiliated with the Iranian Army, and noted that the pictures were taken in southern Lebanon. The soldiers in the pictures could be seen wearing military fatigues that included patches of the flags of Iran and Hezbollah, a terrorist group that has been a bitter rival of Israel, most notably in the Second Lebanon War of 2006.
Fourth, today, under the Sign category of DISEASES & EPIDEMICS — According to Reuters, a woman is critically ill in Hong Kong with the deadly H7N9 strain of bird flu, the first confirmed case in the city this winter. The woman, 68, was admitted to hospital on Thursday after falling ill on Dec. 19. The case has been classified as “imported” after it emerged the woman had recently been in the Longgang district of Shenzhen in mainland China, where the first human case of the deadly H7N9 strain was reported in March 2013. The government is trying to track down friends of the woman who may have been exposed to the virus, the source of which had not been determined.
Fifth, today, under the Sign category of THE TURMOIL IN ISRAEL & THE MIDDLE EAST — According to Reuters, a British-based Syrian monitoring organization said on Sunday that the Islamic State militant group has killed 1,878 people in Syria during the past six months, the majority of them civilians. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said ISIS also killed 120 of its own members, most of them foreign fighters trying to return home in the last two months. The militant group has taken vast parts of Iraq and Syria and declared a caliphate in territory under its control in June. Since then it has fought the Syrian and Iraqi governments, other insurgents and Kurdish forces.

The prophetic passage of Scripture we are looking at today is Exodus 19:7-8 which reads: “And Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and laid before their faces all these words which the Lord commanded him. And all the people answered together, and said, All that the Lord hath spoken we will do. And Moses returned the words of the people unto the Lord.”
Allow me to share with you some commentary on this passage from the Popular Bible Prophecy Commentary, edited by Tim LaHaye and Ed Hindson.
In the New Testament, Paul reveals Israel’s need for the Torah, the Mosaic law. The Mosaic Covenant, often misrepresented as a means of salvation, serves rather as a complement to the Abrahamic Covenant to reveal God’s standards of obedience for the Israelites to enjoy the promised blessings of the Abrahamic Covenant. As Pentecost states, “the Law of Moses was given to a redeemed people, not to redeem a people.” And while the Hebrews had been removed from Egypt, it would take time for Egypt to be removed from the Hebrews. The nation’s spiritual immaturity necessitated a spiritual primer.
Pentecost summarizes the purposes of the law. First, the law was given to reveal the holiness of God, which was the underlying foundation for the Torah’s every requirement. Second, the law was given to provide a basis of comparison between God’s holy standards and Israel’s behavior. It helped expose Israel’s sin as the nation chose to conform or not to conform to God’s ethical requirements. Third, the law was given to reveal God’s high ethical standards for those who would enjoy fellowship with Him. Fourth, as Paul said, the law was to serve as Israel’s tutor, bringing the people to a sufficient level of spiritual maturity to receive their Messiah through faith. Fifth, the law was given as Israel’s national constitution. Sixth, the law was given to maintain Israel’s separateness from the corrupting forces of surrounding, idolatrous nations and to provide the basis for Israel’s mediation as priests on behalf of those other nations.
If the Lord tarries His coming and we live, we will continue looking at the prophetic passages of the Bible in our next broadcast / podcast.
Our second coming quote for today is from D.L. Moody. He said, “I never preach a sermon without thinking that possibly the Lord may come before I preach another.”
If you are not ready for the return of Jesus Christ, may I encourage you to get ready today by receiving Him as your Savior. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will. Romans 10:13 says, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Keep looking up for your redemption draweth nigh. Let us join in the prayer of John the Revelator — “Even so, come, Lord Jesus.” God bless you.
