Let’s take a quick look at today’s prophecy-related headlines which point towards the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ and the end of the world as we know it.

First, today, under the Sign category of DISTRESS AMONG NATIONS — According to Reuters, Chinese President Xi (SHE) Jin-ping has urged faster development of advanced new military equipment to help build a strong army as the country steps up an ambitious modernisation plan that has rattled nerves across the region. Speaking at a two-day conference of the People’s Liberation Army, Xi said that military reforms should be “guided by the objective of building a strong army.” Xi has been pushing to strengthen the fighting ability of China’s 2.3 million-strong armed forces as they project power across disputed waters in the East and South China Seas.

Second, today, under the Sign category of INCREASED NATURAL DISASTERS — According to Mercury News, a new scientific study has shown that the last three years of drought were the most severe that California has experienced in at least 1,200 years. The study provides the state with breathtaking new historical context for its low reservoirs and sinking water tables, even as California celebrated its first good soaking of the season. The researchers found that by analyzing tree rings that date back to 800 A.D. — a time when Vikings were marauding Europe and the Chinese were inventing gunpowder — there is no three-year period when California’s rainfall has been as low and its temperatures as hot as they have been from 2012 to 2014

Third, today, under the Sign category of DISTRESS AMONG NATIONS — According to the Associated Press, in an annual speech ranging from economy to school tests, Russian President Vladimir Putin evoked religious imagery and defended the Kremlin’s aggressive foreign policy as necessary for his country’s sheer survival. Russia annexed Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula in March and was later accused of supplying pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine with ammunition and manpower. Putin in his annual state-of-the-nation address defended the annexation, describing Crimea as Russia’s spiritual ground and “our Temple Mount.” Although Russia is boosting its national defense budget Putin said it is not going to get involved in an expensive arms race. He said unspecified “unusual solutions” are at the nation’s disposal, and added, “No one will succeed in defeating Russia militarily.”

Fourth, today, under the Sign category of THE TURMOIL IN ISRAEL & THE MIDDLE EAST — According to Israel National News, the United States is considering taking “harsher action” against Israeli construction efforts in Jerusalem and in Judea and Samaria. Reports stated that the White House has been discussing taking “active measures” to discourage Israeli construction, instead of just issuing condemnations, as it has done until now. However, commentators on Israel’s right dismissed the story as “political scare tactics” in the wake of upcoming elections in Israel.

Fifth, today, under the Sign category of WARS & RUMORS OF WARS — According to Reuters, President Bashar Assad said in an interview that Syria’s conflict will be long and difficult and that its army cannot be everywhere at once. He also vowed to remain in power saying that no one could predict when the war with insurgents seeking to oust him would end but indicated that enemies had failed to win over the population, allowing the military to advance. Assad also said US-led air strikes in Syria since September were an “illegal intervention” that had made no difference in the fight against Islamic State militants who are fighting government forces.

The prophetic passage of Scripture we are looking at today is Genesis 49:10 which reads: “The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.”

Allow me to share with you some commentary on this passage from the Popular Bible Prophecy Commentary, edited by Tim LaHaye and Ed Hindson.

The Midrash, a vast corpus of homiletical commentary, holds the interpretation of Shiloh as a reference to the Messiah. Furthermore, the Talmud, the Jewish oral law, and Rashi, the eleventh-century rabbinic “goliath,” all take Shiloh with reference to “King Messiah.”

The point is patently emphasized through the genealogies recorded within the Gospels—whether through Jesus’ adopted father or his mother—that Jesus belongs to the tribe of Judah. Interestingly, if Jesus had not come prior to the destruction of the temple and the accompanying loss of all its stored genealogical records that would occur a mere 75 years hence, any claims that He had to tribal descent from Judah would have been hopelessly unverifiable. God’s timing for the appearance of Shiloh, the one “to whom it belongs,” was impeccable.

If the Lord tarries His coming and we live, we will continue looking at the prophetic passages of the Bible in our next broadcast / podcast.

Our second coming quote for today is from J.C. Ryle. He said, “Uncertainty about the date of the Lord’s return is calculated to keep believers in an attitude of constant expectation and to preserve them from despondency.”

If you are not ready for the return of Jesus Christ, may I encourage you to get ready today by receiving Him as your Savior. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will. Romans 10:13 says, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Keep looking up for your redemption draweth nigh. Let us join in the prayer of John the Revelator — “Even so, come, Lord Jesus.” God bless you.
