Let’s take a quick look at today’s prophecy-related headlines which point towards the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ and the end of the world as we know it.
First, today, under the Sign category of THE TURMOIL IN ISRAEL & THE MIDDLE EAST — According to Israel Today News, Iranian military officials say their country has provided the terrorist organization Hezbollah in Lebanon with hundreds of missiles with 160-220 mile ranges, capable of hitting the city of Dimona in southern Israel. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said the missiles, called Fateh missiles, fly at a speed of 2,800 miles per hour and carry a 1,100 pound warhead. An Iranian general said, “Our strategic guiding principle is the appropriate arming of Hezbollah and Hamas with advanced, modern weapons in order to allow the resistance groups to deal with the bloodthirsty Zionist regime.”
Second, today, under the Sign category of THE TURMOIL IN ISRAEL & THE MIDDLE EAST — According to the Jerusalem Post, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday that the recognition of Israel as the nation state of the Jewish people is the basis of any future peace accord as he responded to critics both domestic and abroad claiming that the controversial “Jewish state” legislation will water down the country’s democratic character. The Prime minister said that while the country’s democratic character was ensured, what is being challenged constantly is that Israel is the nation-state of the Jewish people. Hamas warned on Monday that the “Jewish state bill” could lead to a “religious war” in the region.
Third, today, under the Sign category of WARS & RUMORS OF WARS — According to Reuters, the United States is preparing to increase the number of troops it keeps in Afghanistan in 2015 to fill a gap left in the NATO mission by other contributing nations. Sources familiar with the situation said final numbers are still being agreed on, but there will be at least several hundred more than initially planned. Under the US commitment, described as a “bridging solution” until other nations fulfill their pledges later in the year or the troops are no longer needed, Washington may provide up to 1,000 extra troops.
Fourth, today, under the Sign category of DISEASES & EPIDEMICS — According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), Madagascar has said that it is trying to contain an outbreak of a plague — similar to the Black Death that swept medieval Europe — that has killed 47 people and is spreading to the capital. The health ministry said there had been 138 suspected cases since the beginning of the year and warned that the death toll was likely to rise in coming months. Health workers mounted a pest control campaign through slum areas around the capital city after two people in the city became infected.
Fifth, today, under the Sign category of WARS & RUMORS OF WARS — According to Reuters, Ukraine leveled fresh charges this week that Russia was sending support to pro-Russian separatists in the east, saying that five columns of heavy equipment were seen crossing onto Ukrainian territory. The latest accusations come amid a standstill in diplomatic efforts to end the six-month conflict in the east in which the United Nations says more than 4,300 people have been killed. Separately, the Kiev military said one soldier was killed and five others injured as a fragile ceasefire declared on Sept. 5 continued to come under pressure.

The prophetic passage of Scripture we are looking at today is Genesis 37:5-7 which reads: “And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren: and they hated him yet the more. And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed: For, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf.”
Allow me to share with you some commentary on this passage from the Popular Bible Prophecy Commentary, edited by Tim LaHaye and Ed Hindson.
Joseph was Jacob’s eleventh son, but because he was the firstborn of Jacob’s beloved wife, Rachel, Joseph was clearly his father’s favorite. Joseph’s multicolored coat was an indication that Jacob sought to elevate Joseph to firstborn status. Certainly the matter of a younger son supplanting elder siblings had durable family precedent with Isaac and Ishmael and with Jacob and Esau.
At the age of 17, Joseph is given two prophetic dreams. In the first dream, the harvested sheaves belonging to Joseph’s brothers bow down before his own sheaf. In the second dream, the sun, moon, and eleven stars bow before Joseph. Joseph’s brothers react to the dreams with hatred and jealousy, for they realize both dreams indicated that Joseph’s whole family would one day prostrate themselves before him in submission.
The brothers’ jealousy and contempt for Joseph leads to his being sold into slavery. The Genesis narrative records how Joseph, over the next 20 years, rose in Egypt from his roles as both slave and convict to eventual ruler of the nation, second only to Pharaoh. Joseph’s prophetic dreams later found fulfillment when his brothers traveled to Egypt during a famine and, not yet recognizing him, bowed before Joseph to beg for food.
If the Lord tarries His coming and we live, we will continue looking at the prophetic passages of the Bible in our next broadcast / podcast.
Our second coming quote for today is from Alexander Maclaren. He said, “The primitive church thought a great deal more about the coming of Christ than about death, and thought a great deal more about his coming than about heaven.”
If you are not ready for the return of Jesus Christ, may I encourage you to get ready today by receiving Him as your Savior. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will. Romans 10:13 says, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Keep looking up for your redemption draweth nigh. Let us join in the prayer of John the Revelator — “Even so, come, Lord Jesus.” God bless you.
