Let’s take a quick look at today’s prophecy-related headlines which point towards the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ and the end of the world as we know it.

First, today, under the Sign category of THE TURMOIL IN ISRAEL & THE MIDDLE EAST — According to the BBC, the deadline for a nuclear deal with Iran has been extended to the end of June after talks in Vienna failed to reach a comprehensive agreement. US Secretary of State John Kerry said that the talks had been “tough”, but “substantial progress” had been made, and the parties will reconvene in December. Iranian president Hassan Rouhani said most gaps had “narrowed” during the talks. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose country has not ruled out bombing Iran’s nuclear facilities, told the BBC that “no deal is better than a bad deal”.

Second, today, under the Sign category of THE TURMOIL IN ISRAEL & THE MIDDLE EAST — According to the Associated Press, in a move likely to further inflame tensions with Israel’s Arab citizens, the Israeli Cabinet on Sunday approved a bill to legally define the country as the nation-state of the Jewish people. The decision followed weeks of deadly Arab-Jewish violence and was denounced by critics as damaging to the country’s democratic character and poorly timed at such a combustible moment. It now heads toward a full parliamentary vote on Wednesday.

Third, today, under the Sign category of WARS & RUMORS OF WARS — According to the New York Times, President Obama decided in recent weeks to authorize a more expansive mission for the military in Afghanistan in 2015 than originally planned, a move that ensures American troops will have a direct role in fighting in the war-ravaged country for at least another year. Mr. Obama’s order allows American forces to carry out missions against the Taliban and other militant groups threatening American troops or the Afghan government, a broader mission than the president described to the public earlier this year. The new authorization also allows American jets, bombers and drones to support Afghan troops on combat missions.

Fourth, today, under the Sign category of DISTRESS AMONG NATIONS — According to the Jerusalem Post, German Chancellor Angela Merkel rejected the idea of Germany recognising Palestine as a state unilaterally, saying the Palestinians and Israel could solve their long-running conflict only through negotiations. Since the 28 EU member states would need to decide unanimously on recognizing a Palestinian state, Merkel’s objection mounts to a veto on the subject. Merkel told a news conference in Berlin that the aim should be that both sides agree on a two-state solution — Israel and a future Palestine — co-existing side by side. She added, the “unilateral recognition of the Palestinian state would not move us forward on the way to a two-state solution.”

Fifth, today, under the Sign category of DISTRESS AMONG NATIONS — According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), a US military spokesman said that China is building a massive island in the South China Sea that could host an airfield in an area where Beijing is locked in bitter territorial disputes with neighbouring states. The vast land reclamation project on the Fiery Cross Reef in the Spratly Islands is one of several pursued by China but the first that could accommodate an airstrip. Lieutenant Colonel Jeffrey Pool said, “It appears that’s what they’re working toward.” He added that a harbour also has been dug out on the east side of the reef that appears large enough for tankers and naval warships.

The prophetic passage of Scripture we are looking at today is Genesis 32:9-11 which reads: ” And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the Lord which saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee: I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands. Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, and the mother with the children.”

Allow me to share with you some commentary on this passage from the Popular Bible Prophecy Commentary, edited by Tim LaHaye and Ed Hindson.

This famous passage describes an unforgettable turning point in Jacob’s life, centered within a moment of crisis. Having been long absent from his homeland, the land of promise, and now on its outskirts, Jacob prays, on the basis of the Abrahamic Covenant, for divine deliverance from the vengeance of his long-estranged brother, Esau. Having sent the entirety of his travel party on ahead, “Jacob was left alone”.

Sometime that evening, Jacob has an unexpected visitor. Rather than spending the night in fearful contemplation of Esau’s potentially hostile reaction to his return, Jacob finds himself preoccupied in a wrestling match with this visitor. The match lasted through the night until daybreak. With dawn approaching and the contest between the two wrestlers ongoing, the mysterious figure dislocates the socket of Jacob’s thigh, severely disabling Jacob. He then demands that Jacob break off the contest. Jacob, however, continues to cling furiously, unwilling to allow the mysterious figure to depart without giving Jacob a blessing. At some point during the wrestling match, perhaps at the moment of his crippling injury, Jacob realizes that his opponent is no mere man, but the angel of the Lord, a physical manifestation of God Himself—that is, a preincarnate appearance of the second person of the Trinity.

If the Lord tarries His coming and we live, we will continue looking at the prophetic passages of the Bible in our next broadcast / podcast.

Our second coming quote for today is from Matthew Henry. He said, “Christ will come when he pleases, to show his sovereignty, and will not let us know when, to teach us our duty.”

If you are not ready for the return of Jesus Christ, may I encourage you to get ready today by receiving Him as your Savior. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will. Romans 10:13 says, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Keep looking up for your redemption draweth nigh. Let us join in the prayer of John the Revelator — “Even so, come, Lord Jesus.” God bless you.
