First Columbia, South Carolina, African-American City Clerk and Faithful Christian, James T. Cantey Sr., Dies at 87

James T. “J.T.” Cantey Sr., of Columbia, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 2014, at the age of 87.

Born Nov. 19, 1926, in Columbia, he was a son of the late Theodore R. and Serena Watkins Cantey.

Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2014, at First Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Samuel K. Lewis officiating. Burial will follow at Palmetto Cemetery.

The family would like to thank the staff of 6W at Palmetto Health Richland, Palmetto Health Hospice, the staff of Oliver’s Care Home, Mary’s Care Home, Dr. Christian Steen, Dr. Tobin Moss, Dr. Craig Maylath of Primary Senior Care, SC Oncology Associates and the host of family and friends who supported J.T. during his illness.

J.T. was a lifelong member of First Calvary Baptist Church. He graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Columbia. He was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army and served in WWII. The three things he enjoyed most were time with his family, time on the golf course and meeting new people. His charm and charisma, as well as a very strong work ethic, led him to be successful in many careers over the course of his life.
