African American Museum in Bowling Green Heads to Campus of Western Kentucky University

The African American Museum in Bowling Green has a new home on Western Kentucky University’s campus that brings it closer to the site of one of the city’s historic black communities.

The museum had a soft opening in June at its former location at 301 State St. as part of annual Juneteenth celebrations. But John Long, chairman of the museum’s board of directors, announced at the time the museum would be relocating.

Museum materials were moved to its new location at the Erskine House on Chestnut Street during the last week of October, he said.

“It’s almost like starting again, but we’ve got kind of the foundation, I think, laid and now we’re trying to build on it,” Long said.

The new space is being rented, as was the location on State Street, he said.

Long is uncertain when the museum will open for visitors.

“We’re still getting settled, and we know that we have a lot to do to have a good opening and really be able to host the public in a full way,” he said.
