In 2012, the Atlanta Falcons were a juggernaut. They were loaded with talent and had just missed going to the Super Bowl when talks began in earnest about the new stadium.
After all, an elite team would need an elite facility.
Then this happened —
“Desecrating the sacred ground of two historic black churches to build a stadium facility for a second rate football team,” said Mount Vernon Baptist Church member Vickie Johnson.
Some folks are calling it the “Curse of the Church Lady.”
Johnson was furious about the stadium being built on the site of the sanctuary of Mount Vernon Baptist. Her angry words became a prophesy.
“I don’t believe in curses,” said one fan, Ben Hayes. “I just believe we got a lot of sorry players that are just not playing with no type of motivation for the game right now.”
Folks we talked to from The Varsity to Centennial Olympic Park had their own opinions about the team’s slide.
And while most don’t put much stock in the curse, they acknowledge that the bad luck is not much of a blessing.
