Let’s take a quick look at today’s prophecy-related headlines which point towards the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ and the end of the world as we know it.

First, today, under the Sign category of DISTRESS AMONG NATIONS — According to The Daily Beast, since Oct. 28, NATO air defenses have detected and monitored four groups of Russian combat aircraft over the Baltic Sea, North Sea, Atlantic Ocean, and Black Sea. Some active-duty and retired U.S. Air Force officials said the aircraft may have been flying to certain predetermined launch points for nuclear missiles. Air Force Lt. Gen. David Deptula, the service’s influential former intelligence chief, said, “It is not farfetched that at some point within the next two years [Russian President Vladimir] Putin makes a more aggressive move in Eastern Europe and uses a nuclear threat to deter a NATO response.”

Second, today, under the Sign category of DISTRESS AMONG NATIONS — According to The Atlantic, during a recent talk at the Washington Ideas Forum, U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel suggested that the United States needed to get used to being in a state of war. He said, “What we’re seeing in the Middle East with ISIL is going to require a steady, long-term effort.” He also said, “I think we are living through one of these historic, defining times. We are seeing a new world order—post-World War II, post-Soviet Union implosion—being built.”

Third, today, under the Sign category of INCREASE IN NATURAL DISASTERS — According to Reuters, Costa Rica’s Tur-ri-al-ba volcano staged its most powerful eruption in years overnight, belching a plume of gas and ash that was reported to sprinkle the capital San Jose some 30 miles away. Some people were being evacuated from the surrounding area as a precaution, but there were no reports of damage or injuries. The last time the volcano spewed lava was around 1863.

Fourth, today, under the Sign category of THE TURMOIL IN ISRAEL & THE MIDDLE EAST — According to The Jerusalem Post, Maj.-Gen. Yair Golan, the outgoing head of Israel’s Northern Command, said on Wednesday that Hezbollah is many times more dangerous than the terrorist organizations in Gaza. He also warned Israelis not to expect the same level of air defense cover that the South and Center of the country received during the war with Hamas in Gaza this summer. He said that Israel would not be able to intercept all of the rockets in Hezbollah’s arsenal and anticipated that in such a war, “There will be many more hits to the home front.”

Fifth, today, under the Sign category of WARS & RUMORS OF WAR — According to Reuters, a rocket launched from Gaza on Friday landed in the Eshkol Regional Council in southern Israel. The IDF had detected a projectile heading toward Israeli territory – the second such incident since Israel and Hamas reached a deal on August 26 to halt seven weeks of fighting. The cease-fire has largely been holding, however no new dates for continued negotiations to end the tension between Israel and Hamas have been announced.

The prophetic passage of Scripture we are looking at today is Genesis 12:1-3 which reads: “Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.”

Allow me to share with you some commentary on this passage from the Popular Bible Prophecy Commentary, edited by Tim LaHaye and Ed Hindson.

The Genesis narrative reveals that the Abrahamic Covenant is a complex of unconditional promises that are stated and reiterated over a period of years within a series of six recorded encounters between God and Abraham. Each successive restatement expands upon and enlarges the promised provisions of the primary, central core of the covenant.

The first passage, Genesis 12:1-3, records God’s initial encounter with Abraham, in which He communicates His commission and His initial promised blessings to Abraham. The narrative records the divine instruction for Abraham to leave his home in Mesopotamia and go “to the land which I will show you.” Although the promises contained within the Abrahamic Covenant are unconditional, the establishment of the covenant itself is conditioned upon Abraham’s initial act of obedience to this command. Every provision and promise is contingent upon Abraham’s voluntary abandonment of his home and his relocation to the land that God promises to reveal. Without this initial act of obedience on Abraham’s part, the covenant would not have been established, and the Genesis narrative (and world history) would have taken a different turn. However, Abraham is obedient.

This initial iteration of the covenant contains promises of personal blessing in specific relation to numerous offspring, reputation, and universal influence. This universal influence would extend to divine retributive justice in regard to how Abraham (and by implication, his offspring) is treated by others.

If the Lord tarries His coming and we live, we will continue looking at this prophecy in our next broadcast / podcast.

Our second coming quote for today is from John Piper. He said, “The center of Christianity is the coming of the Son of God into the world as a real man to destroy the works of the devil and create a new people for His own glory. The very heart of our faith is that He did this by obeying the law of God, dying for the sins of His people, rising victorious over death, ascending to God’s right hand with all His enemies under his feet. The second coming of Christ is the completion of His saving work. If you take it away, the whole fabric of His saving work unravels.”

If you are not ready for the return of Jesus Christ, may I encourage you to get ready today by receiving Him as your Savior. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will. Romans 10:13 says, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Keep looking up for your redemption draweth nigh. Let us join in the prayer of John the Revelator — “Even so, come, Lord Jesus.” God bless you.
