North Carolina Man Pleads Guilty to Terrorism Charges

Federal prosecutors say a North Carolina man who tried to join the fighting in Syria is pleading guilty to terrorism charges.

Forty-four-year-old Donald Ray Morgan will be sentenced in February. He pleaded guilty Wednesday in federal court in Greensboro to attempting to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization and possession of firearm by a felon.

He faces up to 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Prosecutors say Morgan tried to provide support and resources to an Islamic terrorist group. Morgan unsuccessfully tried to travel from Lebanon to Syria to join the fighting.

Morgan was arrested in August at JFK International Airport in New York on a federal indictment for possession of a firearm by a felon. The firearm offense occurred in January 2012.
