First, today, let’s look at some Signs of His Coming in the news.

The disciples asked Jesus in Matthew 24:3, “What shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?” Jesus Christ then went on to give them (and us) clear signs that show us when we can begin to expect to see the coming of the Lord and the end of the world. Those signs include:

1. the appearance of false Christs and false prophets
2. wars and rumors of wars
3. famines
4. pestilences (fatal epidemic diseases)
5. earthquakes in divers (various) places
6. increased persecution of believers
7. the Gospel being preached in all the world
8. signs and great wonders in the heavens (involving the sun, moon, stars, and planetary movements)
9. distress and perplexity among people
10. increased violence “as in the days of Noah”
11. increased homosexuality and sexual immorality “as it was in the days of Lot”
12. the rise of “Gog and Magog” (which many Bible scholars believe refers to Russia)
13. the rise of the “kings of the east” (which many Bible scholars believe refers to China)
14. increase in knowledge (science and technology)
15. apostasy in the church
16. interest in a unified world government to bring about global peace
17. interest in the rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem

The Bible also speaks of other signs which will be evident in “perilous times” in Second Timothy 3. Those signs are people being:

18. selfish
19. covetous
20. boasters
21. proud
22. blasphemers
23. disobedient to parents
24. unthankful
25. unholy
26. without natural affection
27. trucebreakers
28. false accusers
29. incontinent
30. fierce
31. despisers of those that are good
32. traitors
33. heady
34. high-minded
35. lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God
36. having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof.

Other signs of the times which have been gleaned from Scripture include:
37. scoffers who mock of Christ’s return
38. movement toward a one-world religion
39. outpouring of the Holy Spirit
40. outbreak of demonic and occultic activity
41. re-establishment of Israel
42. Arab hostility toward Israel
43. re-unification of Europe
44. movement toward a one-world economy

Looking at world events through the lens of the Word of God, let’s look at some headlines from today’s news that point to the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.

First, today, under the Sign category of WARS & RUMORS OF WARS — According to Reuters, officials at the U.S. military’s Central Command have said that Iraqi forces are months away from being able to start waging any kind of sustained ground offensive against the Islamic State and any similar effort in Syria will take even longer. In Iraq, the timing will depend on a host of factors, some which are out of the military’s control. Iraqi forces also must be trained, armed and ready before major advances, like one to retake the city of Mosul, which fell to the Islamic State in June. A military official said, “It’s not imminent. But we don’t see that that’s a years-long effort to get them to a place to where they can be able to go on a sustained counter-offensive,” instead, he described it as a “months-long” endeavor.

Second, today, under the Sign category of THE TURMOIL IN ISRAEL & THE MIDDLE EAST — According to the Associated Press, a top Israeli minister said on Saturday that there was a “crisis” in the country’s relations with the United States that must be fixed. Finance minister Yair Lapid’s comments came a day after US officials said the Obama administration refused Israeli defense minister Moshe Yaalon’s requests to meet several top national security aides. The administration is still angered by negative comments Yaalon made about Kerry’s peace efforts in the middle east and nuclear negotiations with Iran. Lapid said “there is a crisis with the United States” and added that the relationship “must be managed respectfully and responsibly.”

Third, today, under the Sign category of INCREASED PERSECUTION — According to The Jerusalem Post, European Jewry is worried about the security of the Middle East’s Christian minority. Moscow-based Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt, the president of the Conference of European Rabbis, said, “the romantic support given by widening circles in Europe to continuous terror attacks against Jews by Islamic terrorists directly impacts the resolve of the West to effectively save the millions of Christians living in the Middle East, whose live are endangered by an ever growing radicalized Islamic threat.” Goldschmidt’s statement on Thursday comes just over a week after the World Jewish Congress held a joint Jewish-Christian gathering in Jerusalem to express support for the beleaguered Christian communities of the region. Goldschmidt said Christians in the Middle East, besides those in Israel, are an “endangered species,” and asserted that “much more should be done to help them [and] to save them” by the Western world.

Fourth, today, under the Sign category of DISTRESS AMONG NATIONS — According to The Wall Street Journal, a top U.S. commander has said that North Korea probably has the capability to produce a nuclear warhead that could be mounted on a rocket, moving it closer to building a nuclear missile. Speaking to reporters at the Pentagon, Gen. Curtis Scaparrotti, commander of U.S. forces on the Korean peninsula, said North Korea is now capable of building a miniaturized nuclear warhead, a step needed to complete development of a nuclear-tipped missile. Such nuclear warheads would be small enough to fit on a ballistic missile and would be a major improvement to Pyongyang’s weapons technology. Gen. Scaparrotti said he also believes that North Korea has developed a launcher that could carry an intercontinental ballistic missile with a miniaturized warhead.

Fifth, today, under the Sign category of THE TURMOIL IN ISRAEL & THE MIDDLE EAST — According to The Times of Israel, the Israel Defense Force is closely monitoring military activity by Lebanese terror group Hezbollah along Israel’s northern border, and soldiers are combing the area in search of underground tunnels which may be used by the extremist Shiite group in order to carry out deadly cross-border attacks. In an interview with Israel Radio, Gershon HaCohen, who recently retired from the IDF at the rank of major-general, stressed that the Israeli defense establishment must take any threats by Hezbollah very seriously, adding that the Lebanese organization had gained crucial battle experience after years of fighting rebel groups alongside the regime forces of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 15:52: “In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.”

Now, it’s time for Prophecy Bootcamp.

Prophecy Bootcamp is where we deal with the basics of prophecy, the Second Coming of Christ, and what will happen in the future according to the Bible. Our aim here is not to make predictions but to help you get prepared by understanding how things will unfold in the end times.

Our topic for today is titled “What is the Apocalypse All About? (Part 1)” from Dr. Ed Hindson’s book “Revelation: Unlocking the Future”.

The central theme of the Apocalypse is given in the title to the book. It is “the revelation of Jesus Christ which God gave Him to show to His bond-servant the things which must shortly take place.” Jesus Christ is the central theme of the Revelation. He is the most important key to understanding the book. He is both the author of the Revelation and the subject of it.

Jesus appears in chapter 1 as the glorified, risen Savior. In chapters 2-3, He is the Lord of the Church. In chapter 4-5, He is the Lamb of God. In chapters 6-11, He is the Judge of all mankind. In chapters 12-13, He is the miracle-born male child. In chapters 14-19, He is the coming King. In chapters 20-22, He is the Lord of heaven and earth.

The purpose of the book is to reveal the future. David Jeremiah observes: “The word ‘revelation’ means the disclosure of that which was previously hidden or unknown. The book of Revelation tells us that Jesus is coming again, how He is coming, and what the condition of the world will be when He comes.” The concept of revelation is that of unveiling a “mystery” which was previously unknown. Merrill Tenney states, “It was not written to mystify, but rather to explain the truth of God more clearly. For this reason, one should approach it with the expectation of learning, and not with the expectation of being confused.”

Lord willing, we will continue looking at this topic on our next broadcast/podcast.

In closing, let’s consider what God wants you and me to do in light of His Second Coming.

Jesus Christ said in Luke 19:13 to “Occupy till I come.” In light of that, we are continuing our Bible study series on the books of First & Second Thessalonians which Paul wrote to believers who had concerns about the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, and what they should do as they waited. This section is titled “Comfort at the Grave (Part 7)” from the book “Waiting on the Second Coming” by Ray C. Stedman.

The Thessalonians gained new insight about Jesus’ second coming “according to the Lord’s own word.” I take those words to mean that this is something Paul had not taught them when he was in Thessalonica. He had taught them about Jesus’ death and resurrection and how that would affect them, but now he provided further truth. “We who are alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep.” “Don’t worry,” Paul reassured them. “You will find your loved ones again when the Lord returns. We will all be together.” This is new revelation, given now “by the word of the Lord.”

If the Lord tarries His coming and we live, we will continue looking at this topic in our next broadcast/podcast.

_____________

Remember the words of the Lord in Matthew 24:42: “Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.” Matthew 24:44 says, “Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.”

If you are not ready for the return of Jesus Christ, may I encourage you to get ready today by receiving Him as your Savior. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will. Romans 10:13 says, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Keep looking up for your redemption draweth nigh. Let us join in the prayer of John the Revelator — “Even so, come, Lord Jesus.” God bless you.
