Scientists Say to Expect More East Coast Flooding in the Next 15 Years

A collective of scientists is sounding the alarm over East Coast flooding events during high tides, a once-rare event which could possibly triple over the next 15 years, including in Washington, Baltimore and other seacoast-hugging regions.

The Union of Concerned Scientists released its study on coastal flooding Wednesday, and issued a scary forecast for coastal flooding during high tides, which occurred rarely in the past but is now common in some areas — including in Annapolis — and increasing apace.

“Several decades ago, flooding at high tide was simply not a problem,” said Melanie Fitzpatrick, the Encroaching Tides report co-author and climate scientist at UCS.
