The attorney who represented Ray Nagin at trial has asked to withdraw from the case, saying the former New Orleans mayor has no money to pay for the legal work on an appeal.
New Orleans attorney Robert Jenkins asked to be removed from Nagin’s case in a motion filed Friday in U.S. District Court.
“The defendant in this matter is indigent and is not able to pay the cost that are associated with the appellate process,” Jenkins wrote.
“Therefore undersigned counsel, respectfully request his honorable court to appoint the Federal Public Defender’s Office to represent Defendant Clarence Ray Nagin, in his appeal to the Fifth Circuit.”
Jenkins didn’t return a message seeking comment.
