I’ve long reported on the many ways that Instagram is quickly becoming a shopper’s delight, like the boutiques and entrepreneurs that use the mobile application to tempt buyers with luscious photos of their colorful goods.
Recently, I came across another, in the feed of one of my favorite actresses, Shay Mitchell, who regularly posts photos of herself in stylish gear. In the description of one photo of herself in a pretty red top and sunglasses, she had included a link to a website and the description “shop the look!”
A quick trip to the website she advertised included information on how to buy everything she was wearing, from her necklace down to her polka-dotted flats.
The site, LiketoKnowit, is a new service that plugs into Instagram and gives people a way to browse the items that they view in their Instagram feeds and may want to buy.
It was developed by a company called RewardStyle, which offers tools for fashion bloggers and publishers to earn commissions on the product links they post on their sites. LiketoKnowit operates similarly: The company has worked with people running roughly 1,000 different Instagram accounts, including celebrities like Ms. Mitchell, fashion publications like Vogue and popular fashion bloggers. If products are bought from LiketoKnowit, the service charges a commission fee to retailers, which it then shares with the celebrity and bloggers using its site.
