A curfew aimed at quelling ongoing unrest in this St. Louis suburb is extending to a second day, Gov. Jay Nixon said Sunday.
The curfew — from midnight to 5 a.m. local time Monday — comes as protesters and police continue to clash a week after the Aug. 9 fatal police shooting of Michael Brown, an unarmed 18-year-old, by officer Darren Wilson.
Seven people were arrested and one person was shot early Sunday as police and protesters clashed again in a haze of tear gas despite the previous night’s curfew.
It was not clear who fired the shot, but Nixon said no police officers fired their guns during or after the protest. He told CNN that the police “are trying to use the least amount of force to provide people the ability to speak, while also protecting the property of Ferguson.”
Nixon didn’t say when he foresaw the curfew ending or whether it would be extended into Tuesday, but added, “We’d like to see it ratcheted down. What we’d like to see, that will be judged by the community.” Nixon said he was “heartened” by people’s response to the curfew early Sunday.
Anger has grown in recent days after police on Friday released a surveillance video purporting to show Brown stealing from a convenience store and roughing up its clerk about 15 minutes before the confrontation with Wilson.
