Xiaomi Dethrones Samsung as #1 Smartphone Maker in China

Smartphone maker Xiaomi has gone from zero to hero, dethroning Samsung and taking the No. 1 spot in the world’s largest mobile market, according to research firm Canalys.

Mainland China accounted for 37 percent of global smartphone shipments (108.5 million units) in 2014’s second quarter, thanks in large part to Xiaomi, which boasted 240 percent year-on-year growth.

Rising from niche player to leading vendor, the company took a 14 percent share in China, beating popular dealers like Lenovo, Huawei, ZTE, and, of course, Samsung—which, together with Apple, accounted for shipments of 20 million units, or 18 percent of China’s overall smartphone market.

The news comes days after Strategy Analytics reported rising star Xiaomi’s move to become the fifth largest smartphone vendor in the world.

“This is a phenomenal achievement for Xiaomi,” Canalys research analyst Jingwen Wang said in a statement. “Undoubtedly this was helped by an anticipated, temporarily under-strength Samsung performance during the quarter. But that is only half the story.”
