A teenage girl who survived a shooting that left her parents and four siblings dead appeared Saturday at a memorial service for her slain family and said she is “on a straightforward path to a full recovery.”
Cassidy Stay, 15, attended the gathering along with hundreds of other people at Lemm Elementary School in Spring, Texas, where two of her younger siblings attended.
“I’m really thankful for all the people that have been praying for me and keeping me and my family in their thoughts,” she said.
Authorities say Ronald Lee Haskell, the ex-husband of Cassidy’s aunt, stormed into the family’s home Wednesday and fatally shot her parents and four siblings, who ranged in age from 4 to 13.
A bullet meant for the back of Cassidy’s head deflected off her finger and merely grazed her. She was released from a hospital Friday.
After Haskell left, Cassidy called police and warned that he was heading to her grandparents’ house next.
