Every homeowner who pays off their mortgage likes to celebrate the occasion in their own special way, and the Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church is no different.
Flint’s oldest African American Baptist church is celebrating paying off the debt on one of its buildings with a Burning of the Mortgage on the Family Life Center Sunday, June 22.
The church completed construction of the $1.5 million center in 1999. It paid off the mortgage in March.
“We wanted to do the celebration earlier, but decided to postpone it for better weather,” said the church’s historian, Melva Viltz.
The mortgage will be burned by the church’s pastor, the Rev. Major A. Stewart, during a special service at 10 a.m. in the church followed by a dinner and renaming ceremony in the Family Life Center shortly after.
