The States Where Students Often Bring Weapons to School

Just hours after the government released its 16th annual report on school safety Tuesday, a tragic school shooting took place at Reynolds High School near Portland, Oregon. The incident left one student and the shooter dead, police said.

While the School Crime and Safety Report — a 208-page study that details the rate of crime taking place in American’s public and private institutions — says America’s schools have gotten safer, the country clearly still has a problem when it comes to protecting its students.

The report, which uses the most recent data available though 2012, shows an overall decrease in school crime throughout the past 10 years, although a slight uptick began in 2010. Indeed, according to the report, 52 per 1,000 students in 2012 felt victimized in non-fatal incidents at school, compared to 35 per 1,000 students in 2010.

However, certain states were prone to certain types of school violence more than others. Using information from the government report, The Huffington Post compiled three maps showing where school violence occurred in 2011 (the latest year for which these numbers were available) and how it was carried out.
