Dianna Hobbs Says Pastor Rudy Rasmus Is Wrong for Defending Beyoncé’s Risqué Image and Song Lyrics

The words of Joshua 24:15 have stayed with me throughout my life: “…choose you this day whom ye will serve.” It is my compass, along with other scriptures, to help me navigate my way through pop culture and align my values with God’s word.

Using the Bible as my foundation also helps me put erroneous commentary from faith leaders into proper perspective, like that of Beyoncé Knowles’ childhood pastor Rudy Rasmus.

In defense of the singer’s risqué image and unhealthy song lyrics, the St. John’s United Methodist Church leader told NBC’s The Grio, “Beyoncé is a consummate entertainer, and an entertainer entertains. Is the entertainer’s entertainment an expression of that person’s life and reality? I don’t know.”

Comparing her onstage persona to that of an actor, the Texas-based author of Love. Period.: When All Else Fails said, “But I know when Arnold Schwarzenegger straps on a 30 caliber cannon and blows planes out of the sky, nobody asks the question, ‘Arnold why are you walking around for those 90 minutes in that suit with that 30 caliber cannon? What kind of person are you?’ I don’t think I’ve heard that question. But at the end of the day, Arnold Schwarzenegger is an entertainer.”

Rasmus added, “I think a person has the right to earn a living in the way that they are gifted, and I think that she is tremendously gifted and I think she expresses that gift in some amazing ways. I think the world would be void an extreme talent if we silenced her or censored her.”

Unfortunately, Rasmus’s ideology omits accountability to God and ignores the call to honor central biblical virtues like modesty and the Scriptures’ admonitions against glorification of the flesh.

Since when did creativity (for a Christian, at least) trump honoring the Creator?

I cannot imagine God on his throne applauding or supporting all His word goes against.

Using Rasmus’s line of thinking, strippers and porn stars could easily adapt his words to endorse their choice to use their sexuality to make a living!

They don’t want to be censored either.
