They were out of sight for only moments.
Two small brothers and their mother were visiting a family friend in their Arizona apartment complex when the boys slipped into another room. That’s where the older boy, 3, saw a handgun, picked it up and fired, shooting his little brother, 18 months, in the head.
The baby died at a Payson hospital in eastern Arizona.
The mother had just stepped into the room when the gun went off.
The family had stopped by the home of the 78-year-old friend and had only been there about 10 minutes when the shot rang out, police said Tuesday.
Several neighbors called 911 after hearing the shot. The mother, who was not identified, was in front of the apartments, sobbing and cradling her bloodied toddler, when paramedics and police arrived.
Investigators are questioning the elderly neighbor. Several weapons were found in the house, police said.
