Rev. Al Sharpton, NAACP, NUL Heads Prepare to Meet NBA Commissioner Adam Silver Regarding Donald Sterling

As NBA owners prepare to vote on whether or not to terminate Donald Sterling’s ownership of the Los Angeles Clippers, the Rev. Al Sharpton will meet with the head of the NBA to discuss the controversial team owner. reports that Sterling will be the focus of a meeting next week between Sharpton, National Urban League president Marc Morial, the NAACP’s newly elected president Cornell Brooks, its acting president Lorraine Miller and NBA commissioner Adam Silver.

Since leaked tapes containing racist comments from Sterling were leaked last month, the NBA has banned the businessman from all NBA activities and fined him. Earlier this week, the league charged Sterling with damaging the NBA and its teams. NBA owners will meet  on June 3 to vote on the fate of Sterling’s ownership of the Clippers.

“[Owners] should know that we expect them to vote unequivocally to permanently remove him,” Sharpton explained to theGrio’s Carrie Healey. “This would be the official vote — that the civil rights community would in no way, shape or form want to see them back down off of this, including engaging whatever litigation that Sterling decides to do. Whatever it takes, by any means necessary, Sterling must go.”

In addition to Sterling, Sharpton added that they want to see Sterling’s wife, Shelly, as well as other Sterling family member removed from ownership as well. The group will also address the NBA’s plan to ensure that there aren’t current or future owners that have views similar to Sterling as well as black ownership and business leaders in the league.
