Fifth District U.S. Rep. Vance McAllister revealed Monday, April 28, he won’t seek re-election this fall but will finish his term. The congressman’s decision comes after a video of him kissing a married former staffer surfaced online on April 7.
According to Monroe News Star, McAllister and his wife Kelly came up with the decision Monday morning.
“I am committed to serving the 5th District to the best of my ability through this term, but I also have to take care of my family as we work together to repair and strengthen the relationship I damaged,” McAllister told the newspaper.
Kelly insisted their marriage is still intact despite the scandal.
“I’m behind him 100 percent,” she said.
“Our family is together and better and stronger than we were before,” the congressman claimed.
McAllister said his wife decided to come back with him to Washington “because she knows it’s going to be a firestorm when I get there and she didn’t want me to face it alone.”
Moreover, McAllister said he is completing his term so “people in the 5th District [will] have a full electoral process.”
