This is the “chief of sinners,” Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International, reminding you of what the Bible says, that “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” like you and me.
During the celebration of Christmas, many people spend time frantically searching for, buying, and wrapping gifts to give to others. During the celebration of Thanksgiving, our thoughts should be on God, but they turn toward family, food, and fun, and making sure that everyone has a good time. During the celebration of a New Year, we are forced to ponder the past and the future and we strive to do those things that will make our future better than our past.
The celebration of Easter is unique. The reason why we celebrate this holiday has nothing at all to do with anything we have done or can do for ourselves, for others, or for God. Rather, Easter commemorates what God did for us in sending His Son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross for our sins, to be buried, and to rise from the dead. Jesus’ resurrection from the dead was a once-in-history event that had never happened before and has never happened since. When the angels rolled back the stone in front of Jesus’ tomb, and declared, “He is not here. He is risen as he said,” Hell groaned in agony, heaven shook with rejoicing, and the earth trembled in awe. The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the singular event in history that stands above all others in scope or importance, and each of us alive today benefit from the event commemorated by the celebration of Easter.
What are the benefits that mankind receives because of Easter?
1. Mankind can be free from the power, the pull, and the punishment of sin. Ever since the fall in the Garden of Eden, every human born into this world has been born a slave — a slave to sin. Romans 3:9 tells us, “we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin.” Our bondage to sin is the reason why we do terrible things. Romans 3:23 says, “all have sinned.”
But, when the first Easter dawned, the grip of sin on humans had been broken. We no longer have to be slaves to sin. Because Jesus Christ lived a perfect life, died on the cross, and rose from the dead, there is an alternative. Instead of being in bondage to sin, we can be free in Christ. The Bible says that Jesus Christ was sent “to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound.” Easter represents the breaking of sin’s stranglehold on humanity.
2. Death is no longer final. For centuries before Jesus Christ came, death was seen as a hopeless proposition. The Bible says the “wages of sin is death,” and since all men are sinners, all men are condemned to die. Nobody could imagine anything good beyond death.
However, the resurrection of Christ and the first Easter changed all of that. When Jesus Christ died on the cross, many of his disciples did not believe or understand that he would rise again. They thought that the revolution that Jesus had started had come to a screeching halt. But, on Easter morning, when Jesus walked free from the grave, they were overjoyed to know that their Savior had met death and had stared death down. Death could not hold the One who had lived a perfect life and died a sacrificial death.
First Corinthians 15:54-55 says, “Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?” Death could not hold Jesus Christ two thousand years ago, and it cannot hold anyone who believes in Jesus Christ today.
3. The way to Heaven is open to everyone. Not only does our sinful nature place a death sentence on our life, but our sinful nature separates us from God. Because of God’s perfect holiness, He cannot tolerate sin in his presence. That is why we cannot go to Heaven on our own.
But, because of Jesus’ death and resurrection, the gates of Heaven are open to everyone, including the most terrible sinners. How is this possible? Second Corinthians 5:21 explains it like this: ‘God hath made Jesus to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.’ In other words, Jesus Christ took upon Himself the sins that we committed when He went to the cross, and God poured out the wrath and punishment for our sins on Jesus Christ.
If we trust Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour, God will no longer look at us as sinners and enemies of; He will see us as saints because we are washed and cleansed in the blood of Jesus Christ. Because of this new status, we can go to Heaven to live with God forever when we die. That is the third wonderful benefit of Easter.
Because of what Christ did for us, we do not have to suffer eternal punishment in Hell, instead, we can have eternal life in Heaven through Him. Romans 6:23 says that “the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” That is the gift that God is offering you today. All you have to do to accept the free gift is trust Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. If you trust Jesus Christ for your salvation, you will no longer be in bondage to sin, you will not have to fear death because death cannot hold you forever, and you will have a place in Heaven.
Why don’t you make that decision this Easter? Romans 10:9 says, “that if thou shalt confess thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” Because of Jesus’ death on our behalf, all we have to do is believe in Him, trusting His death as the payment for our sins — and we will be saved! Romans 10:13 reiterated this when it says, “for whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
You can trust Jesus Christ for salvation right now today by praying this short prayer to let God know about your decision? Just repeat after me and mean it from your heart.
Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today and forever. Amen.
If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved from Hell and you are on your way to Heaven. Welcome to the family of God and congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour.
