There was a bit of rumbling but no damage reported from what the U.S. Geological Survey said was a 2.5-magnitude earthquake near the I-35E and Loop 12 split.
The quake that hit about 2:45 p.m. Thursday was 5 miles deep, and was the first one in the Dallas-Fort Worth area since Jan. 28, the last in a string of 35 earthquakes since Nov. 1, a USGS official said.
“I don’t recall a quake in this particular area recently,” said Randy Baldwin, a USGS geophysicist. “It had some quakes back in October of 2008, a 3.0-magnitude.”
The USGS wasn’t aware of the quake until it received 21 reports on its website (http://earthquake.usgs.gov/) from people who felt it, Baldwin said.
“We didn’t initially pick it up on our instruments, because the nearest we have are in the Azle area,” he said. “We went back in and looked and were able to find it.”
Dallas and Irving police dispatchers said they received no calls about the quake. Baldwin said he wouldn’t expect damage or alarms from a 2.5- magnitude quake.
