A Broadway producer has acquired stage rights to the long-running TV show.

It looks as if Broadway is about to get another jukebox musical.

It was announced Tuesday that Rock Of Ages producer Matthew Weaver has acquired the stage rights to Soul Train, the TV series that was a prominent forum for R&B, pop and hip-hop artists for 35 years, from 1971-2006

In a statement, Weaver noted that late Soul Train creator Don Cornelius “created a television show that became a cornerstone in American culture,” adding, “We’re putting together a top notch team of artists to ensure Soul Train is the hippest trip on Broadway.”

Earvin “Magic” Johnson, chairman of Soul Train Holdings, LLC, also issued a statement, noting, “Creating a live theatrical interpretation of this iconic franchise is an opportunity that could not be missed.”

No timeline or attached artists have been announced yet.
