Colossians 4:6 says, “Let your conversation be gracious and attractive…” And yes, that scriptural command extends to our social media pages.
One North Carolina pastor has upset quite a few folks with this tasteless tweet: “Ladies if you want to be the only woman your man looks at Shine It Up! Don’t let the hoes he comes across out shine you.”
Clutch Magazine reports that Andy Thompson, leader of the 10,000-member World Overcomers Christian Church in Durham ruffled more than a few feathers on April Fool’s Day.
He particularly rubbed blogger Taurean Brown the wrong way, who took offense to the pastor’s use of what he calls a “derogatory term in reference [to] women.”
Brown, whose views on sexuality are liberal and not reflective of a biblical perspective, says, “In no context whatsoever should women ever be referred to as hoes, not even women who are engaged in sex work.”
The outraged blogger adds, “Pastor Andy needs to humble himself and express his sincerest apology to women.”
Thompson heeded that advice.
In a video response posted to YouTube on April 1, he said, “I’m so sorry. You’ll have to forgive me. I understand that it’s so easy for there to be misunderstanding.”
He then tried to provide a framework for his commentary as a means of justifying the crass nature of the twitter post which has since been deleted.
“I was in a marriage seminar. I was talking to wives. I was trying to help wives to save their marriage, to be successful in their marriage.”
He continued, “And some may feel like there’s never any context in which it’s okay for a pastor to call women hoes. You’ll have to forgive me. Please forgive me. Our goal and our aim is to help women.”
