Holman United Methodist Church, in conjunction with Kaiser Permanente, will host the first in a series of health education events on Saturday, March 29, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at 3320 West Adams Boulevard in Los Angeles.

The presentation will be conducted by a Kaiser health education specialist and focus on diabetes detection, prevention and effective self-management.

The faith-based partnership was the brainchild of a Kaiser employee who attended a Homan UMC Disciples Bible study class where students were challenged to find ways to utilize their spiritual gifts in the church environment.

Over the course of a year, Holman members met with Kaiser management and developed a pilot program where Kaiser could reach out through churches and other faith-based organizations to extend health education and services to the community.  Currently, Holman and Southside Church of Christ have partnered with Kaiser to implement this grassroots health initiative. There are three components to the program:  Hospital discharge visitation, lay health coaching, and the health education lecture series.
