Hill First Baptist Church will celebrate its history as the oldest black church in Athens during its 147th anniversary celebration 3 p.m. Sunday.
Located at North Pope and Reese streets, Hill First’s history includes visits from Martin Luther King Jr. and Sr., and being the central meeting place for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference during the Civil Rights movement.
Today, it is listed on the National Register of Historical Places in the U.S.
