As residents marked one week since the East Harlem explosion, those affected by the tragedy now have a new place to turn for help. NY1’s Jon Weinstein filed the following report.

At the New Beginnings Church in East Harlem, Wednesday started with a prayer for those who died and those still struggling one week after the explosion that rocked Park Avenue and 116th Street.

The church is opening its doors and urging anyone needing help to visit.

“Anything that they were to request, especially a heart right now, an ear, a word of compassion. If they need a little space where they can just lay down. You’re welcome,” said Rev. Dominick Reyes of New Beginnings Church.

The church, located at 180 East 118th Street, is now a donation site, taking clothes and serving meals. For the volunteers from the church this is a chance to help neighbors in a time of great need.

“It’s our church and we’re in the community you know and we care. It hurts us. We want to show them they’ve got a little bit of support,” said one volunteer.
