But star cornerback can see divided locker room if Sanchez struggles
Mark Sanchez picked up a key endorsement from Darrelle Revis in the Jets’ explosive quarterback controversy, but the best player on the team acknowledged the potential for a split locker room if Sanchez does not play well.
Revis is one of the Jets’ most important voices, and assuming the cornerback shows up for training camp, Sanchez can count on his support this summer. He has been complimentary of Tim Tebow’s leadership skills and although he didn’t say anything negative about his quarterback skills, Revis all but stood up on a chair in front of his locker Thursday to declare that Sanchez is his guy and he can take the Jets to the Super Bowl. “I feel very comfortable and confident with Mark,” Revis told the Daily News. “This is his fourth year. I’ve been with him since he was a rookie. The guy took us to two AFC Championship Games.”
Revis says it’s clear in his mind that Sanchez is the starter. “That’s what we know as a team,” he said. “Mark is the leader of the offense and the starting quarterback.”
He may be good enough to hold off the accuracy-challenged Tebow — it’s hard to win games when the quarterback is throwing the ball in the dirt — but can he get the Jets where they want to go? “Yeah, he can,” Revis said. “If he got us to two AFC Championship Games at a young age, he can. He’s improved a lot and he’s going to keep on improving. Mark works very hard. This guy is here all the time. Usually here with me. He does what he does. Don’t write him off.”
Does Revis envision a controversy?
“It already started,” he said. “This is something we are going to have to deal with probably for a couple of years. We’ll see how it pans out.”
