French scientists say they’ve been able to transform adult cells taken from seniors citizens into stem cells.
Researchers at the University of Montpellier were able to produce stem cells from cell samples taken from people in their 90s.
The stem cells they produced are identical to embryonic stem cells that can become any kind of cell
Some scientists believe embryonic stem cells have the potential to become any type of cell in the body, which could hold the key to curing all types of diseases.
Ethical concerns, however, over destroying human embryos have prevented putting that theory into practice.
But with this research, adult cells could be used to grow healthy tissue. If it could be safely transplanted into elderly patients, it could open up new avenues of treatment for seniors.
