Members of Congress are urging President Obama to cut off aid to Egypt because of the growing persecution of Christians there.
That appeal is being circulated in a letter on Capitol Hill. Lawmakers want to suspend $1 billion a year in military aid until Egypt’s Christians are fully protected.
Coptic Christians make up about 10 percent of Egypt’s population.
Religious freedom advocates, speaking to the Family Research Council this week, highlighted the increasing violence against the Copts since the ouster of former President Hosni Mubarak.
Advocates say Copts are fleeing Egypt in droves to escape attacks from Islamists and government forces.
They said the U.S. should warn Egypt’s leaders that their transition to democracy is doomed unless they grant Christians full and equal rights.
