Huckabee — a former Arkansas governor who’s got his own show on Fox – said on the O’Reilly Factor that Perry’s religion is a plus in reaching the evangelical Christians who make up a big share of early voters.
“Rick Perry’s numbers are down because his debate performances have been extremely less than spectacular, and I’m being charitable,” said Huckabee, continuing a fractious relationship with Perry. “Gov. Perry started at the top … but his repeat debate performances and the fact that he has not been able to find his footing on some key issues has just made people start looking elsewhere.
I’ve been in Texas three different times this week, and the interesting thing was that the buzz was not about their governor. The buzz was about Herman Cain,” said Huckabee, who called Cain “winsome.”
Perry’s running into the sometimes brutal reality of playing on the national stage, he said.
