Update: According to a message reTweeted on Cornel West’s Twitter page, “Dr. Cornel West will be spending the night behind bars and is ordered to appear in court Monday at 1 p.m. EST.”
Earlier:
Attending the historic dedication of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial in DC inspired Princeton professor Cornel West to emulate the slain civil rights leaders’ example of braving jail for the cause of justice. West was arrested while demonstrating on the steps of the Supreme Court building against corporate influence over government.
In the NCFTV video below, West tells his fellow demonstrators, “We are willing to get arrested or do whatever it takes to say we will not let this day of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s memorial to go without somebody going to jail, because Martin King would be right here with us.” He also tells the police that he and the protestors stand in solidarity with them “as working people.” Later in the video he declares solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street movement and other “Occupy” protests around the world.
