Herman Cain’s political surge continues, as a new Gallup Poll finds the former pizza chain executive within 2 percentage points of Mitt Romney in the GOP presidential field.
GOP presidential hopeful Herman Cain, left, has risen in national polls as Rick Perry has tumbled.
Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, leads the GOP candidates with 20% compared with 18% for Cain in the Gallup survey. Cain has more than tripled his support in about three weeks after garnering just 5% in Gallup’s mid-September poll.
The new poll highlights trouble for Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who has tumbled and has 15% support among Republicans and GOP-leaning independents. That’s half of Perry’s standing in Gallup’s presidential poll last month, taken a few weeks after the Texan jumped into the race.
Twenty percent of GOP and GOP-leaning independents say they are undecided about three months before the opening Iowa presidential caucuses.
Cain, former CEO of Godfather’s Pizza, has seen his national poll numbers rise since he won a Florida straw poll Sept. 24. The former talk-radio host has garnered attention in recent debates. The candidates will face off again tomorrow in a New Hampshire debate focused on the economy.
