This year the U.S. has been hit by 10 natural disasters costing at least $1 billion each, which is the largest number of major events in 30 years of record-keeping.
The Associated Press reported the total cost has been estimated to be close to $25 billion.
The costliest natural disaster to strike this year was Hurricane Irene, followed by the spring tornado spike.
In just the last week of April, 305 tornadoes caused 327 deaths and nearly $7 billion in insured losses.
